Our Humble History

In 1941 an old, store building located at 164 Cumberland Street, Lunenburg was purchased by the Salvation Army. The upstairs served as living quarters, and the ground level served as a hall for church services where as many as 100 people attended during the war years. Eventually, a new building was built in Bridgewater, and the Lunenburg building was disbanded.

The Liverpool Wesleyan Church held services from 1967 to 1973, but then they decided to discontinue the work. A group of people attending wanted to see the work continue and so purchased the old Salvation Army building in 1974, naming it Faith Bible Chapel. They worked together to hold Sunday evening services, Friday evening Youth Group, and children’s clubs. Additionally, they began a small summer camp named Faith Bible Camp with 18 boys and girls attending. Pastor Gary Countway and wife, Pam, joined the work from 1979 to 1981, working part-time as a pastor and part-time in the community.

In 1981 the church called Reverand Walter James Hicks (Jim) and his wife, Evelyn. They had recently returned from long-term missionary work in South Africa. Pastor Hicks challenged the congregants to match his $100 donation (a hundred-dollar bill with Lunenburg on the back) and thus began the building fund for a new church. In 1986 the church became affiliated with the Fellowship of Evangelical Baptist Churches in Canada and changed its name to Faith Baptist Chapel. A sod turning ceremony took place on a newly acquired property just outside of the town limits in Centre on June 18, 1989. Pastor Hicks was a man of faith and resources. While attending a conference in Philadelphia, he met Fran Monahan who was starting with an organization called Helps International Ministries that worked to physically build new churches. Pastor Hicks asked Fran where he was going next, and when Fran said he didn’t know, Pastor Hicks said, “I know.” And soon Fran, wife Marge, and their three children moved to Lunenburg, and lived in the tiny apartment above the old church. Fran and his oldest son, Tom, began to build the church. Shortly, they were also joined by other shorter-term helpers and volunteers from within the congregation who offered their time and knowledge to complete the present building. A dedication service was held on August 26, 1990. On March 31, 1990, Rev. Hicks resigned as acting pastor, but he continued to assist as a church member until early in 1992 when he was called to pastor a church in Lake Echo, Nova Scotia.

In 1991 Pastor Steven Hiltz and his wife, Sharon, were called, and he ministered to our growing congregation until 2001 when he took a position as regional director for the Fellowship Atlantic Churches. Pastor Chris and Sandy Emery ministered to us from 2002 to 2006. After Steve Hiltz’ time with Fellowship Atlantic Churches, he and Sharon returned to Lunenburg once again, ministering from 2007 until September 2024.
